Obesity treatment often requires ongoing approaches.

Fresh analysis suggests that people who discontinue blockbuster GLP-1 drugs like Wegovy and Mounjaro may regain reduced body mass much more quickly than those who end traditional diet and exercise regimens.

Published data in a leading medical journal demonstrates that while overweight people can lose a large proportion of their total mass while using the jabs, the weight comes back at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.

"Individuals buying such drugs need to be cognizant of the danger of fast weight regain when the therapy concludes," stated lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of recovery implies a return to starting mass within about a year and a half.

Comparing Treatments

The research, which examined dozens of studies involving thousands of patients, contrasted the results of GLP-1 agonists with conventional dieting.

The team emphasize that people who lose weight through diet and exercise typically see a slower weight regain—around 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.

The Reason for the Fast Regain

Doctors believe the mechanism of the jabs explains the heightened weight return.

The injections copy a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which controls appetite.

"Sustained high doses of the hormone concentrations far above than normal may cause the body to produce less of its endogenous GLP-1, and may also diminish responsiveness to its effects," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.

"Discontinuation of this medication results in appetite is uncontrolled, making binge eating far more likely."

A Chronic Disease?

Health authorities suggest the injections for people with weight-linked medical conditions, alongside recommended diet and exercise modifications.

Professionals contend that, due to the high risk of relapse, the therapy might need to be ongoing.

This perspective is echoed by drug manufacturers, who note that the results "highlight the chronic nature of obesity," similar to managing diseases like diabetes.

Patient Accounts

People who have discontinued the medication report a sudden return of cravings.

"I experienced a trigger that goes on and you're instantly ravenous," described a patient.

This difficulty is exacerbated if users have not established sustainable dietary or behavioural changes during treatment.

Growing Use

Recent estimates indicate that a significant number of adults in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the past year, with interest continuing to grow.

  • Adoption is greater among females than males.
  • The 40s and 50s age group shows the greatest level of interest.
  • A large proportion access the medications through private prescriptions rather than public health services.

Finally, clinicians emphasize that while these medications are effective tools for shedding pounds, they are not a magic solution and maintained weight loss likely depends on ongoing lifestyle support.
